This album is for layback studying and window down cars rides. Buddy is able to capture the presence of the LA in an album. Overall I recommend Buddy for someone who either always wanted to go to LA or a native from there. Everyone can recall that age when they thought they knew everything and trying to be “mature.” In “Young” Buddy creates a ballad with memories of being young and not listening to those around you. This song just has a great bounce to it and shows off his storytelling skills. In “trouble on Central” I can easily relate to Buddy narrative being stuck on a bus and viewing the city from the window. He worries if his path can help all the people who supported him when times were tough. Buddy reflects on finally earning money from music but it still didn’t solve his problems. 97 ' Bucktown ,' Smif-N-Wessun Smif-N-Wessun pay homage to the 'home of the original gun clappers. It was musical irrigation to our souls the first time it washed over the summer airwaves. My favorite track from Harlan & Alondra is “Trouble on Central”,” Young”, and “Real Life Sh*t.” In “Real Life Sh*t” Buddy remembers how hard he had to work to get this far in music. Produced by the late great J Dilla and inspired by Common's ex Erykah Badu, 'The Light' warmed up many nights throughout the 2000s. I think Buddy main strength in this project is his ability to paint a narrative with his lyrics. When Buddy mentions LA landmarks I’m able to picture where he’s talking about. Why I know po-po isn’t a curse word, so that’s why Thile left it in. But otherwise he keeps the lyrics intact. He replaces fucked up with messed up, which again, fine. In this album I get extra easter eggs, being for the same area as Buddy. At one point, he replaces it with little buddy, presumably meaning his son again, that’s sweet. This album really speaks to me because I’m from South LA. In his debut album Harlan & Alondra, Buddy introduced to his life as a beginning artist and his life in LA. He doesn’t overdo production so you can catch a vibe or focus on content. ![]() The production in this album is smooth and lowkey. The sound of this album is old-school west coast rap but doesn’t sound dated. From the choices of production in this album, Buddy sounds like an old soul. He doesn’t act the rapper part, and that makes him more enjoyable because he seems like a regular guy. ![]() When approaching verses, Buddy comes off as some genuine being himself. He is a part of a sound that based in rap but can easily move into soul and funk. Buddy sound give him a distinct difference between other artists. Coming from that part of LA, I expected a certain sound. He came up from the same street as an artist like The Game, Kendrick Lamar, Dr, Dre, YG, and N.W.A. This is Buddy, a new rapper hailing from Compton, California.
